Rooftop Family Photos in Downtown Aurora Illinois
Wanting something unique for your winter family photos, but unsure where to take them? Try a parking garage rooftop! It’s long been my vision in my head to put together a family session here, so I was beyond excited when my friend Melanie said YES to taking their family photos in downtown Aurora. I’ve come to love the downtown Aurora area and all of the history and culture that is represented in the businesses all around. I knew we’d able to find a great spot, and the parking garage proved perfect.
We met and chatted before the session to plan their outfits (step 2 of my custom family photo experience!). Three things I considered when making helping with outfit styling advice: 1) cloudy winter skies in late November, 2) minimal greenery in the scene, 3) the parking garage’s muted concrete, urban colors. With that in mind, we wanted to plan outfits that would compliment the environment. We also wanted it to feel elevated and stylish, while also being casual and fun.
Mel did an awesome job pulling everything together! A few things she did to achieve the vision:
1) wearing pointed heel boots and a blazer that dressed up her jeans and graphic tee,
2) having her daughter in a denim skirt that pulled together the blues,
3) adding a letterman jacket to her oldest son for a layered, urban feel to balance out the vibe
Okay, moving on because you NEED to see these precious family photos! It could not have been a more perfect day for family photos in downtown Aurora, on a parking garage rooftop nonetheless.
Making a Fun Environment for Family Photos
One thing I’m committed to as a family photographer is helping make the photoshoot experience FUN and stress-free. We all know that the process of getting family photos taken can be super overwhelming. But, if you have a photographer who cares about your experience from start to finish, then hopefully you will walk away with a sigh of relief and a whole lot of excitement to see the pics. 😉
Some things I do to help make sure my families have a great time on the day of their session:
• Lots of assurances and encouragement that everyone is doing amazing and that there is NO expectation for perfection! We go with the flow. Kids are kids. I follow their lead and literally let them run around if needed. Sometimes those photos turn out to be the most favorite!
• Bringing a speaker to play music. This has proved to be so fun for everyone. I’ll ask the kids their favorite songs and put on a playlist we can move and groove to, which helps ease nerves and add energy
• No expectations of time. There is no time limit I put on family sessions. That’s because when kids are involved (plus weather, wind, literally anything else), you just can’t plan everything out!
These are just some of the things I’ve done to help give my families an amazing experience on their family photo session! And I believe greatly helps with the final results that come from it.
