Aurora Family Photos at Oakhurst Forest Preserve
There’s something special about photographing friends—especially friends who are also photographers. Say hello to my sweet friend Kayleigh, her husband, and their energetic two-year-old. They’re a fun, easygoing family with a lot of heart. Kayleigh is a wedding photographer, a dancer, and someone who brings joy everywhere she goes. Through the years, we’ve taken each other’s photos and it always is a load of fun.
For this session, we met at one of our favorite locations: Oakhurst Forest Preserve in Aurora. It’s a go-to spot for many of my clients looking for Aurora family photos because the preserve offers open fields, tall grass, a lake with bridges, and peaceful water views from the hilltop. Even on a chilly, cloudy fall day, we had perfect light and earthy tones that made the photos pop. On this day, the cooler air encouraged extra snuggles—which is always a win.
How to Take Family Photos With Toddlers
If you’ve ever had photos taken with a toddler, you know the experience can be a mix of fun, chaos, and unpredictability. Cold weather or unfamiliar places can make little ones want to wiggle, explore, or fuss instead of sit still and smile. During our session with this little guy, we tried a few posed looks to start, but it was clear he needed to move. Rather than fight against his natural energy, I suggested we let him get down and explore.
Once he had space to explore and take in his surroundings, his personality came alive. Kayleigh and her husband followed his lead, scooping him up, chasing him through the grass, and sharing sweet little moments that weren’t planned—but ended up being some of the best photos of the day. These organic interactions often tell the truest story of a family!
My approach as an Aurora family photographer is to foster a blend of thoughtful planning, gentle direction, and room for spontaneity. I use prompts instead of stiff poses, and I let little ones guide the flow when needed. This creates photos that feel real. Sessions with toddlers don’t have to be perfect to be meaningful. In fact, the imperfect moments usually become the favorites!
