No one ever thinks they’ll find themselves scheduling a photoshoot knowing it might be their last one together as a family. No one wants to receive the news that their precious loved one has been given a time limit. But when Chris reached out to me, his courage and emotion were clear. His wife, Jen, was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer. And though this was the most heartbreaking of circumstances, it was also the most beautiful opportunity to preserve her story with in-home lifestyle family photos.
As an Aurora family photographer, I approached this session with all the tenderness and compassion I could give. Listening to their story, learning more about Jen, I was able to get a fuller picture of the incredible person she is. Jen is stunning—inside and out. She is a beloved soul in her community, with a legacy of caring for others. Her grace and strength is overwhelming.
Pulling on their interests and passions, I offered gentle guidance on outfits and suggestions for the session. When I arrived the day of the session, I was stunned at how beautifully humble and meaningful every piece of their home is.
There were tears throughout the session. Hugs that lingered. But the moment that will stay with me forever was when I asked if they’d like to slow dance together. Their college aged kids stood nearby, watching their parents share the moment. As they swayed quietly and wiped away each others tears, I took photos quietly as my own eyes filled.
These are the moments in-home lifestyle family photos are made for. Real moments. Deep love. Connection that speaks without words.
At the end of the session, I asked if I could pray over them. We stood in their home, inviting God’s peace and healing into their lives and over Jen. As a Naperville family photographer and someone whose faith is central to my work, this was more than a photoshoot—it was truly what my work is all about.
Reading together is a daily part of their life. Hundreds of scrabble tournaments are documented in her favorite floral booklet. They’ve cared for every plant and pot and fish and lovingly placed them around the home they’ve built together and raised their children in.
So, we made sure every part of it could be wrapped up in images to take them back to those memories over and over again.
After spending time with Chris and Jen, we had their kids join in for some special moments together. Finally, her parents joined in at the end. Having all three generations of women in the family turned out to be such an emotional moment for all.
In-home lifestyle family photos allow space for authenticity, for natural emotion, for stories to unfold in familiar surroundings. And in this case, it gave a family something to hold onto when words and time fall short.
It’s moments like these I remember the reason for what I do. The part where compassion and creative gifts combine to create something too meaningful for words. Where Jesus takes the spotlight because it’s by Him we experience true life, breath, peace, and hope.
The thing about family portraits is that to others it may just look like some pretty photos, when really it’s someone’s whole world.
And that’s why I’m not just an artist, but am a people-person first.
Thus, I meet with all my clients multiple times before even taking a photo because storytelling is so much more than just showing up with a camera. It’s about listening, learning, being intentional. To be entrusted with their world is to be willing to build relationship first.
To the family who welcomed me into their lives: thank you. You reminded me that even in the most painful seasons, love is strong. And it deserves to be remembered.
“So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” – 1 Corinthians 13:13
